The results of social and economic development of St. Petersburg in 2018 considered in the session of the Administration of St. Petersburg

The Chairman of the Committee for Economic Policy and Strategic Planning of St. Petersburg Valery Moskalenko presented the results of social and economic development of St. Petersburg for 2018 at the session of Administration of St. Petersburg in Smolny.

He stressed that the past year had been a time of establishing sustainable and positive dynamic of the development in practically all key sectors of the city economy. Moreover, some figures had done the records, thereby strengthening St. Petersburg such a leader of social and economic development amongst other Russian regions.

According to recent statistics, the main indicator characteristic of the state of city economy is investments. Over 750 mlrd rubles of investments were enclosed in fixed investment with the growth rate of 4,3 percent. According to recent three years, the total amount of fixed investment was two trillion rubles. The major rating agencies increased their assessments on St. Petersburg in 2018.

The index of industrial production was 105,0 percent that significantly higher to 2,9 percent than the national average index. Nowadays about 347 thousand people are working in the industry sector. IIP in 2018 amounted 20 percent from GRP index.

In addition, city economy is inextricably connected with the implementation of innovation. St. Petersburg ranks first position in the Rating of Association of innovative Russian regions. Total amount of domestic expenditures on research and development amounted to more than 120 mlrd roubles in 2017. Nowadays about 77 thousand people are working in this sector.

According to preliminary estimates, a substantial amount of work has done in the construction industry, and has reached about 573 milliard rubles. The amount of housing construction reached 3,95 mln square meters. In St. Petersburg housing construction exceeded Moscow level more than 400 thousand square meters. Nowadays about 127 thousand people are working in this sector.

Also, retail trade turnover exceeded 1,4 trillion rubles in 2018 with the growth rate of 2,3 percent. This growth has linked to increase the volume of non-food items to 5,3 percent. . Nowadays about 125 thousand people are working in this sector.

Positive trends also showed in 2018 in foreign trade. In the total, the foreign trade turnover amounted to about $ 50 milliard that was 10,1 percent more than last year. Positive trends, it should be noted, has emerged by the growth of export volume that has amounted to almost $ 26,5 milliard, including the significant growth in engineering output (to 15 percent) and pharmaceutical products (to 10 percent).

This, in turn, tourism is the fastest growing economic sector. During the last year 8,2 million people visited St. Petersburg (3,9 of them are foreigners), and 700 thousand people more than in 2017. Moreover, St. Petersburg awarded by World Travel Awards in some categories.

In conclusion, the positive growth of population of St. Petersburg was 32 thousand people in 2018, which equals 5,38 million people of the total population of St. Petersburg at year-end 2018.
